- YouTube now defaults videos that contain ads to show them in post-roll.
- Through a partnership with AdReady, MSNBC.com is offering marketers a self-service online display ad offering. It is targeted to small and mid-sized businesses, in particular local retailers, because of its geo-targeting features.
Agencies and Marketing Execs:
- Brand New World/NY made Tarah Feinberg a creative director.
- Scott Kelliher of Virgin Mobile has joined AOL’s Platform-A. He will serve as category sales director for telecom.
- In efforts to shape up, Yahoo will reportedly lay off staff.
Biz Buzz:
- Widget and social technology firm Gigya raised $11 million in a venture round led by DAG Ventures. This brings Gigya’s total raised capital to $23.5 million in two years.
Mobile:
- Moving forward, developers will no longer have to sign the nondisclosure agreement Apple requires when they submit an application for iPhone — which was intended to protect the company from those that would tattle to the press what kind of apps they reject.
- China has a huge surveillance system dedicated to monitoring and archiving internet text conversations on services like Tom-Skype (a joint venture between Skype and a Chinese wireless provider).
Music:
- Apple claims it will shut iTunes down in the UK if forced to pay higher music royalty rates.
Overseas:
- Conjugo has launched a search engine for new technology offerings. The company is based in the UK. Suppliers that wish to add their offerings to the site can contact Conjugo directly.
Publishing:
- Google relaunched Blog Search. Major topics in the blogosphere are aggregated across the front page, and users can drill down through 11 categories.
- HealthiNation drew $7.5 million in Series B funding, led by Intel Capital. It also expanded its online video network to include partnerships with LifeScript, UCompare Healthcare, Parade Magazine, Lee Enterprises (a newspaper publisher) and Guideposts magazine.
Social Networks:
- As the result of Facebook redesign, Silicon Alley Insider confirms that pointless widgets — which populated many profiles — now lack the viewership to remain viable.
- Hip Venture Co. launched HipChicas.com, a virtual world targeted to environmentally-conscious Latinas. Users can chat in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French; an automatic translator interprets for other users.
- Facebook has confirmed plans to establish an international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.
